Hunters popular and groundbreaking novel attracted much attention when it was first published, and it became a top bestseller in 1955. However, the reality of American school life reflects a different ideal. Within the novel, Hunter suggests that American idealism centers on the belief that education should be the main goal of all public school systems it, in essence, should be the 'bulwark' of democracy. The main theme of 'The Blackboard Jungle' is the clash between American idealism and the realities of American school life. Hunter's work is set during a time after the war. Since then, Franzen has been named, variously, the Great American Novelist, a noted crank, a human Banksy installation, and simply kind of a prick. Second, he said he was uncomfortable with Oprah selecting The Corrections for her book club because she’s picked a lot of schmaltz, and became synonymous with the worst of elitist white male snobbery. First, he released his breakout novel The Corrections and became known as one of the most important American writers of his generation. Jonathan Franzen has flourished crankily under controversy since 2001, when two big things happened to him. Which means it is time, once again, for one of the book world’s favorite pastimes: disseminating Jonathan Franzen thinkpieces. Jonathan Franzen, the novelist who has been lauded and reviled as few figures in contemporary American letters ever are, has a new book out. It’s disconcerting at first but does fade away after a few chapters. The result is that you may find yourself forced into “unhearing” and “unlearning” Stone first, and then readjusting to his new voice. He is given a very deep “dumb as rocks” voice in Caulky, but in Nailed, his voice is completely different - much more upbeat, similar to Cole’s voice in Caulky. If you’ve read Caulky and then you immediately read Nailed, you may encounter an additional issue: a character “schism” in Stone due to two very different voices from one book to the other. It happens too often to be chalked up to inadvertent mistakes. Also noted in this book with the “weaker” narrator, a number of inexplicable mispronunciations. Nailed has the same two narrators as Caulky and while they are both more than competent - good diction, intonation, pacing - one narrator is definitely stronger than the other - richer tone, better emotional representation of the words on the page - which is something noted in Caulky but amplified in Nailed. Her characters are incredibly inviting - particularly to little ones!
